Body Posture And Nonverbal Communication - 2013 Words

Since many researcher reported that body posture and nonverbal communication projects our thoughts and emotions, subsequently there have been debates that different sexes express body position in different ways. This current study investigated whether different sexes (males and females) tend to hold rails with different arm positions (above shoulder or below shoulder) in New York City subways. We hypothesized that males tend to hold vertical rails above the shoulders, as opposed to females with the arm holding rails below the shoulders. There were 437 riders who were holding vertical rails and observed in New York City subways as a natural setting. Twenty observers looked at arm position, sexes, and approximate age of participants. Results consistently showed with our hypothesis that males are more likely to hold the rails above their shoulders. Females are less likely to hold their arm above their shoulders. Observers decided the level of arm position of participants by looking at t he location of fingers against their shoulders. According to our results, our finding is implied that different sexes have different postulate expression. Also, Different sexes express body posture in different ways, regardless of cultural differences.
